What Is Glaucoma? How Does It Damage My Vision?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions where the optic nerve is damaged. Your retina converts information gathered from light entering your eye into neural signals. These signals are transmitted to the brain by the optic nerve. Any damage to the optic nerve inhibits its ability to transmit these signals. Enough damage to the optic nerve will result in blindness.

An abnormal high eye pressure is the most common cause of glaucoma. Excessive pressure against the optic nerve for an extended period of time will cause damage. The puff-of-air test given during an eye exam is used to check the pressure within your eye.

What Are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?

The most common type of glaucoma has no early warning signs or symptoms. That is why it is important to have regular eye exams and have eye pressure tests performed. If gone undetected and untreated, you may start to notice a loss in your peripheral vision.

A more severe type of glaucoma will have a sudden occurrence of drastic symptoms:

  • Blurry vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Eye pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you start to experience these symptoms, you should see a doctor right away.

How Is Glaucoma Treated?

Glaucoma treatment will not restore any vision loss. It should be noted that you need to have regular eye exams to catch this degenerative condition in its earliest stage to prevent the damage it causes.

If your glaucoma is caused by high eye pressure, then you may be prescribed medicated eye drops. These eye drops lower the pressure within your eyes, preventing the damage it can cause to your optic nerve. Oral medication may also be prescribed. Since high eye pressure is a chronic condition, the use of these eye drops and medications will become part of your daily routine.

In some cases, surgery may be performed to reduce pressure within your eyes. Some glaucoma cases respond better to the surgery than the medication. Glaucoma surgery provides better drainage for your eye, thus maintaining proper pressure within your eye.
